Infertility affects one out of every eight couples. If a couple has been trying to conceive without success for a year or six months and/or if both partners are over 35, infertility issues may be present. A male factor issue is present in half of all couples experiencing infertility. The majority of male fertility problems have the potential to be reversible, and it is possible for fertility potential to be lower than it could be even if a normal semen analysis is obtained.
Male reproduction is dependent on healthy sperm that can fertilize an egg. When this process is not happening naturally, it may be a result from various factors such as hormonal issues, anatomic problems, genetic factors, or environmental and lifestyle factors.
The process of diagnosing male infertility typically begins with a semen analysis to examine the health of sperm under a microscope. A semen sample is obtained via masturbation into a specialized container in a private collection room at our office. A general physical examination along with other medical interventions such as ultrasounds, advanced semen tests, genetic tests, hormone testing, or a testicular biopsy may be necessary.
A comprehensive male fertility exam involves diagnosing underlying causes and correcting reversible factors to improve sperm production and health. Ultimately, a combination of lifestyle modifications, medications, and surgery may be necessary. Helping you create your family is my goal!
