To inflate the prosthesis, the man presses on the pump in the scrotum, causing fluid to transfer from the reservoir to the cylinders in the penis, resulting in an erection. The more firmly the pump is compressed, the harder the erection. There is a deflation valve on the pump that allows fluid to return to the reservoir, deflating the penis and returning it to the normal flaccid state. Patients with a three-piece implant can fully deflate the prosthesis, making it completely concealable and discreet.
As with any surgery, infection is a possibility. With our technique, the risk of infection is around 1%. Men who need surgery to adjust or replace an implant (revision surgery) are at a higher risk of infection than they were with the first surgery. The 10-15 year device survival rate approaches 90%.
The penile implant does not interfere with sexual sensation or climax in any way. Its primary function is to allow men to sustain an erection for as long as they desire. This provides men with the ability to maintain a dependable and firm erection well after orgasm, a capability previously unattainable.
Recovery time varies between individuals, but most patients can return to a desk job within a week. We advise patients to avoid heavy lifting during the first two weeks and gradually resume normal activity as tolerated. Complete sexual function can typically be restored within 6 weeks.
The majority of commercial insurance providers and Medicare include coverage for the penile implant. To ensure that all necessary documentation is completed ahead of time, we verify the insurance benefits of all patients considering the implant.
