Many factors are considered to determine the appropriate technique to use for sperm retrieval, primarily the patient’s underlying condition as well preferred approach will guide our decision. Some of the procedures that can be performed include TESA, TESE, and microTESE (mTESE). Fortunately, all of these procedures are minimally invasive.
- Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA): A small needle is used to extract sperm from the testicles.
- Testicular sperm extraction (TESE): A small incision in the scrotum is used to obtain sperm directly from the surface of testicle without a microscope.
- Microscopic testicular sperm extraction (mTESE): A small incision in the scrotum is made and with the aid of an operating microscope, a complete search within the entire testicle to find patches of sperm production is performed.
Many these procedures can be performed in the doctor's office with local anesthesia.
